Weiku switches focus
In a story published on December 3, we reported the closure of Weiku, a Beijing-based entertainment Web site.
Former company production manager Dave O'Dell has since pointed out that the headline that accompanied the story, 'Heavy spending on content leads to Weiku demise', was incorrect.
'Weiku the portal went down because, just like all other ICPs [Internet content providers], the business model wasn't reliable in the face of all the competition. Our funding wasn't in question. In fact, we got additional funding to switch to a different profit-producing business model,' said Mr O'Dell.
Although the entertainment portal has closed down, the company remains in business as part of parent company Rock Records, providing application development and digital rights management systems for broadband networks.
