I refer to the letter from G. Marques headlined 'New number would help police' (South China Morning Post, December 8).

Mr Marques has expressed concern about the response time when reporting non-emergency cases to police by fax or e-mail.

As I have pointed out before in these columns, the 999 number is for emergency calls only.

For non-emergency reports, if an immediate or urgent response is required, members of the public should phone the report room of their local police station.

In all other cases, reports may be made by fax to stations. Alternatively, on-line forms or e-mails can be sent through the police homepage (www.hkpolice.com) and the system will deliver them to the relevant police station where action will be taken.

Fax and phone numbers of all police stations can be found on the police contact card which can be obtained from district offices and police stations.
