Who says speech days cannot be fun and educational at the same time? Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School showed that it can be both at its 36th annual speech day.

A humorous English play by four second formers, The Army, was greeted with applause from the packed hall.

'I was a little nervous when I first stepped on to the stage and faced the audience. Luckily everything went smoothly as we moved along,' said Ray Choi, who played a pirate.

'We gave ourselves 85 points,' the boys said. 'We want to do it again. The next time, we will try another comedy.'

Guest-of-honour Wong Mak Kit-ling, principal of Belilios Public School, spoke of the meaning of life. Ms Wong was the principal of the Shau Kei Wan school for six years before moving on to the girls' school in Tin Hau.

'You should persevere in all your endeavours and not be easily overwhelmed by frustrations and strive for excellence in everything you do. To succeed, you should give it your best shot,' she said.

Quoting an interview with Financial Secretary Antony Leung Kam-chung in the Young Post, Ms Wong encouraged students to work on their language proficiency.

Fourth former Li Man-chung won prizes in six subjects.
