'I think our support for the campaign is good for staff, as well as customers. People come in and it's something positive and fresh,' said regional marketing manager Ruth Black, as she handed over the chain's donation of $100,000.

'There's something bright sitting on the counter [donation boxes] and our staff have their Santa hats on and are getting into the festive spirit. People are giving, which is great.'

Throughout Operation Santa Claus 2001, donation boxes have been set up at Pacific Coffee outlets around Hong Kong. Staff have also worn 'Have a Hug' badges to get into the spirit of the season.

Proceeds will go to the KELY Support Group, which helps young people deal with issues including drug and alcohol abuse.

Pacific Coffee also sponsored a walkathon, held on December 17, which went from the French International School to the Peak.

Ms Black said it was important that the company gave something back to society.
