I REFER to the letter headlined, ''Family is being badly battered'', from A. J. Deignan (South China Morning Post, July 5).
I am delighted that so many people are expressing concern for the problems families are experiencing, especially those relating to children.
In my estate in Kowloon, there is a primary school. Each morning, I am woken, not by my alarm clock, but by the school's loudspeaker.
I appreciate that schools must have loudspeakers in order to make announcements, but what I find disturbing is the tone and attitude adopted by teachers, towards their pupils.
Pupils are ordered to be quiet and get ready for their lessons.
I even heard a teacher's voice over the tannoy telling them to ''Shut up'' in a strident voice. These orders are barked out, until a complete silence descends over the whole school.
I do not believe this is the right and proper way to treat children. They are human beings, not animals.
