The blockbuster Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone has left Hong Kong audiences spellbound, making the second-biggest debut in Hong Kong cinema history.
The film took more than $20 million at 35 cinemas in its first seven days, second only to Steven Spielberg's The Lost World: Jurassic Park in June 1997.
Distributor Warner Bros also said Harry Potter took $10.5 million in its first four days from December 20 to 23, making it the biggest December opening of a foreign film. Figures for locally made films are not available.
The four-day total dwarfed the four-day record of Oscar-winning Titanic, which earned $6.2 million from December 18 to 21, 1997.
Harry Potter, which tells the story of an orphaned wizard, also claimed another record - the biggest debut on a weekend.
In Macau, the film became the territory's biggest-opening picture. By Wednesday, it had brought in $600,000 from two cinemas.
