An outspoken senior Taiwan representative last night said she had quit her post for personal reasons, after reports she could not work with the island's de facto envoy to Hong Kong.

Hundreds of government officials, politicians and business leaders turned out to bid farewell to Susie Chiang Su-hui, who will stand down as director of the Kwang Hwa Information and Cultural Centre, the island's quasi-official information office in the SAR, next week. Taiwan journalist Lu Ping will replace Ms Chiang, who has been in the job for 10 years.

Speaking at the reception, Ms Chiang said she had resigned because she wanted to enter another stage of her life. It had earlier been reported that she was at odds with unofficial envoy Chang Liang-jen. Ms Chiang is a member of the pro-reunification New Party, while Mr Chang belongs to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

'I think I cannot make further breakthroughs in my work, so rather than staying in the same spot, I decided to find a new space, a new pasture,' she said.

Ms Chiang said she would stay in the SAR, but would not disclose her plans.

She said she had declined an invitation from Mr Chang, managing director of the Chung Hwa Travel Service, to become an adviser.
