Chateau de Lady Masburel $68

This classic French blend has the same cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc grapes as the grands crus of Bordeaux, but at $85 you can afford to drink it (it's on offer until January 3 for $68). Made on the 260-year-old estate at Bergerac, the winery has for decades been eclipsed by mightier names in neighbouring St Emilion. But it offers extremely good value for money and has been cannily chosen by Wellcome to elevate its wine selection. A stylish, tasty and elegant French classic at a bargain, festive price.

This brilliant bubbly is from South Africa. The non-vintage sparkling wine has a classical French heritage; it's made in the traditional Champagne method. Half pinot noir and half chardonnay, it's elegant and vivacious. The vineyards are scattered over four locations around the Cape winelands, giving winemakers the security of being able to pick from the best crops. The result is a reliable sparkler. Stellenzicht $390

This elegant 1999 syrah is regarded as one of the five best wines made in South Africa. One whiff of its compelling aroma and you can smell why; a quick slurp confirms the verdict. Winemaker Guy Webber aims to 'put the Cape in a bottle'. Making distinctive vintages with quality fruit has alerted regional colleagues that syrah (also known as shiraz) does well in Stellenbosch. Great with roast meats or tomato-based pasta sauces.
