GIVE YOURSELF A BOOST

Adele Rosi

The season to be jolly is over for another year and it's time to draw up that annual list of healthy resolutions. But while serious detoxing can take weeks, there are a wealth of beauty products and treatments to put the bloom back in your cheeks in a matter of minutes.

Quick fixes

Skin: for a facial pick-me-up the morning after the night before, try Clarins' Beauty Flash Balm. A staple product in many models' make-up bags and a personal favourite, it has achieved cult status as a panacea for tired and lifeless skin. Simply apply a thin layer to your face after cleansing and moisturising for instant revitalisation. $215/50ml from branches of Lane Crawford and Watson's; and Clarins' salons at The Peninsula hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui; and Central Building, Queen's Road Central.

Clinique's Turnaround Cream shot to fame when it was launched in 1995, but the brand's new Total Turnaround Visible Skin Renewer, which gives you brighter, smoother skin after just one application, is better. The cream, applied sparingly at night, is designed to renew the skin while you sleep, thanks to the inclusion of amino sugars to optimise cell turnover and a vitamin E derivative to help combat damage. About $330 for 50ml from branches of Lane Crawford, Sasa and Watson's.

As well as antioxidants and botanicals for long-term skin repair, Estee Lauder's Spotlight Skin Tone Perfector ($275) contains a pink pearlescent shade to reflect light away from imperfections and give you an immediate glow. Use over moisturiser as a make-up base or a highlighter. To make a round face appear longer, apply a strip of Spotlight from under the middle of the eye across the centre of the cheekbone and down to the chin; for long faces, a strip across the cheekbones will make them seem fuller. From all Estee Lauder counters.

A good detox for fatigued skin is Aesop's Primrose Facial Cleansing Masque ($275 from Joyce Beauty, Queen's Road, Central. tel: 2810 1120). The putty-coloured treatment dries into a fine, chalky layer in seconds but should be left on your face for 15 minutes. The result: softer, smoother and more radiant skin.

Treat yourself to a late Christmas present and go for an Oxyjet Triple Oxygen Facial at The Beautiful Skin Centre ($1,288; Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2877 8911). As well as having your skin pumped with oxygen, and inhaling clean O2 through a mask for 10 blissful minutes, your face becomes noticeably more glowing and less lined by the end of the 90-minute treatment.

Eyes: Estee Lauder's Stress Relief Eye Mask does just that in 10 minutes, making dark circles and fine lines less visible. Put each pad about three millimetres under the eye and pat in any residual product after the pads ($220 for 10) have been removed. From all Estee Lauder counters.

A slice of cucumber over each eye works wonders for puffiness. Alternatively, soak a couple of black tea bags in cold water and hold one on each eye for 10 minutes. The tannic acid content reduces swelling. Gently press from the inner to outer corners of your eyes to hasten drainage.

How to fake it: make small eyes look larger by highlighting the brow with a shimmery white shadow to reflect light.

Widen eyes by brushing a neutral shadow all over lids and bringing attention to their outer corners with a slightly darker shadow applied on the outer third.

Brighten tired eyes by brushing a shimmery metallic colour over your regular shadow.

Beaute Par Zai (suite 1005, Queen's Place, 74 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2524 1272) offers an ayurvedic treatment called neeriti dhara ($450 an hour; $650 with oxygen inhalation, which is well worth doing). Including the application of green tea and camomile compresses, a ginseng mask and an infusion of witch hazel, neroli and frankincense, it transforms red, sore eyes into bright, clear peepers.

Long-term remedy

Beauty, it seems, is not just skin deep and our appearance reflects our inner self. Spots, dull skin, lifeless hair, tiredness and tight waistbands are just some of the symptoms of over-indulgence, caused by the liver becoming swamped by toxins it can't flush out quick enough. The 21-day liver detox aims to help the liver to function correctly by eliminating alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, sugar, wheat and dairy products for three weeks and supplementing your diet with nutrient-packed drinks that are essential for detoxification. Stock up on will-power and good books (the detox is hard to stick to if you have a lot of evening engagements) but get ready to feel great, have clear skin, lots of energy and possibly lose a bit of weight. A programme is available from homeopath Graham Stuart Bradshaw (tel: 2523 7121).

If you don't want to take such a drastic measure, try to drink at least a litre of water a day, eat fresh fruit and veggies, cut alcohol consumption and smoking, and up the amount you exercise and sleep.

At the end of the day, the feel-good factor goes a long way to banishing post-party blues. Go for a detoxifying full-body massage at Ellespa ($425 for 50 minutes; G106A, The Repulse Bay, 109 Repulse Bay Road, tel: 2537 7736).

Alternatively, a soak in a bath infused with Rosemary and Mandarin Aromatherapy Bath Salts ($95 from Joyce Beauty), which also contain sea salt, jojoba and clay, does the mind, body and soul a world of good.
