Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

Pearl, 9.30pm

The plot may be risible and the script fairly feeble, but this sequel to the all-conquering Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is still worth watching for fans of Jim Carrey (above). The goofy, rubber-faced comedian is as manic as ever as he reprises the role that helped catapult him to the Hollywood A-list.

This time, the zany animal sleuth with the gravity-defying hairdo emerges from self-imposed exile in a remote Himalayan hideaway and travels to deepest, darkest Africa on a mission to find Shikaka, a rare white bat sacred to the Wachati tribe which has gone awol. And the clock is ticking - Ventura must find the beast before the wedding of the tribal chief's daughter or all hell will break loose between the Wachati and their rivals the Wachootoo. The gags aren't as funny as in the original, and the supporting cast (including Ian McNiece as explorer Fulton Greenwell and irritating luvvie Simon Callow as Vincent Cadby) is not as strong, but Carrey's comic capers still raise a few chuckles.
