The death toll was expected to rise as several more people, including the suspected bomber, were believed to be underneath the rubble, Chongqing police said.

The China News Service said the bombing took place on Friday in Fenshui town in the Wanba district of the city. Houses near the razed workshop were damaged, it said.

Police suspect the motive for the bombing was revenge. Zhang Yadong was named as the suspect, the agency said.

Officers confirmed the flattened building was an illegal fireworks factory.
