Fears of a triad war emerged after a man was hacked and seriously injured as he lay in the wreckage of his car following a high-speed car chase - one of a number of incidents over the weekend.

According to police, the 38-year-old man and his girlfriend, 21, left a disco in Percival Street in Causeway Bay shortly before 6am and were heading east on the Eastern Corridor when they noticed a car was following them.

The driver tried but failed to shake off his pursuer.

Eventually he lost control and crashed the car into an embankment opposite City Garden in North Point.

Thirty minutes later police found the vehicle believed to have been used by the attackers ablaze and with its licence plates missing in Lai Chi Kok Road, Mongkok.

The woman, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, told police the pursuing vehicle halted in front of them and three men, armed with choppers, attacked her boyfriend before escaping. The victim was taken to Eastern Hospital in serious condition with multiple wounds.
