TVB is to suspend the production of televised stunts after pop star and actress Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi fractured her spine during a charity stunt show last Friday.

Controller of variety programming Ho Lai-chuen said yesterday the television station would be more cautious about such performances in future.

He said TVB would not produce stunt shows in the immediate future because of the low morale of production crew following Friday's accident, which will leave Cheung bedridden for months.

Cheung, 21, cracked a vertebra after driving her car through a wall of flames and over five vehicles in a stunt which raised $1.3 million for Yan Chai Hospital. The stunt, conducted at a Tseung Kwan O building site, appeared to succeed, but Cheung was hurt when the car landed harder than expected.

'We take full precautions and insure every stunt performance. The driving stunt was completed well but an accident did happen, even though cardboard boxes were placed in the right position to reduce the impact caused by the landing,' Mr Ho said.

Cheung was taken to Tseung Kwan O Hospital and transferred to Baptist Hospital. Doctors said the fracture was close to nerves and she would be bedridden for at least two months.
