I suppose the well-meaning actions of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the International Olympic Committee have not had the desired effect.
They both had high hopes of China improving its bad human rights record after it joined the WTO and when it was granted the 2008 Olympic Games. However, when it arrested alleged 'Bible smuggler' Lai Kwong-keung, it was clear communism is not dead yet. Let's face it, China is still very much a communist country. Sure, it allows private businesses to operate and some people to practise religion. But only if the entrepreneurs and religious followers keep a low profile and adhere to the rules set down by the communist leadership.
Mr Lai was apparently a member of a group known as the 'Shouters' and now Beijing regards them as an evil cult. Why? Because they actually say what they believe?
I wonder if the Chinese Government ever does the slightest bit of research into the various groups it brands evil cults.
