I refer to the letter from Elsie Tu headlined 'Anti-Tung drive does not have mass support' (South China Morning Post, January 10).

Mrs Tu said the Coalition Against Second Term (Cast) claimed to 'represent all the people'. We have never said that.

We appreciate some people support Tung Chee-hwa, especially when they learned that he had been anointed for a second term. However, many opinion polls have repeatedly showed that a large number of people are dissatisfied with his performance and do not want him as Chief Executive.

I am quite certain if he stood in direct elections he would lose.

Mrs Tu is right to say that not many Hong Kong people bother to take to the streets to protest against Mr Tung, but that has more to do with their feeling of impotence and futility rather than their support for an inept Chief Executive.

She said if there are better candidates they should stand for election and not be merely back-seat drivers. The sad fact is that the so-called election by a committee of 800 people is not a real election. It is a foregone conclusion that Mr Tung will be given a second term and thus any talk of a challenger is meaningless.
