Left rounds on 'rotten' Prince
London (Jan 18): The Queen's husband, Prince Philip, was called one of Britain's best kept social welfare claimants by leftwing politicians angry today at his latest comments on the economy.
They rounded on the Prince for comparing Britain's economic situation with dry rot in a building: 'You don't know where it starts but gradually the place becomes uninhabitable.
'We have virtually left the league of the big powers,' he said. 'Third World, here we come.'
This prompted a retort, referring to the GBP65,000 annual sum the Prince receives from the State, from a Labour Party Member of Parliament, Mr Tom Little: 'As one of the best kept social security claimants in the country, I think he ought to have spoken with a better sense of responsibility.'
