Fruity reward for schools in Healthy and Happy Lifestyle Epigrams Competition
APPLES seemingly flooded Kau Yan College, and between mouthfuls students said a fruity ''thank you'' to Form 2 student Yuen Jing-wai.
Thanks to Jing-wai's winning a recent Chinese epigram contest, the whole school received a gift of Australian apples.
Over 300 primary and secondary schools took part in the ''Healthy and Happy Lifestyle Epigrams Competition'', organised by the Australian Trade Commission and the Education Department.
Thirty-nine epigrams were chosen from 9,125 entries in the primary, junior and senior high school categories.
This year's contest encouraged a positive lifestyle among young people. Some of the topics were ''Positive Attitude'', ''Caring for the Disabled'', ''Building a Good Relationship with One's Family'' and ''Love of Life''.
The winners of the primary and junior high sections, Kwan Yiu-fai, 10, and Jing-wai, 13, expressed a caring attitude towards the disabled.
Jing-wai's verse read: ''Judging others by their faces is too one-sided; Being polite to others is more multi-faceted.'' ''I have seen many examples in life in which politeness proves to be a superior quality than appearance,'' the student said.
