China State Construction Engin-eering (Hong Kong), once notorious for polluting the SAR, has been rewarded for taking several environmentally-friendly initiatives.
The mainland-backed construction company has won the Gold Award in the 2001 Hong Kong Eco-Business Awards, Green Construction Contractor Award category.
Late last year, the company won the Quality award in the 2001 Hong Kong Awards for Industry.
'We have put much effort into environmental protection in the past few years,' says Yao Xian-cheng, executive chairman and president of CSCE - a subsidiary of mainland developer China Overseas Holdings.
'We are very happy that our company, which had been reported by the media as one of the top polluters, has won such awards in the environmental protection area,' says Mr Yao.
Just two years ago, it was reported that CSCEC was on the list of Hong Kong's worst polluters, with many offences for breaking pollution laws, such as doing construction work without a valid noise permit.
