An internal inquiry into the Sports Development Board's role in the Gary Cheng scandal was meaningless and an independent inquiry was needed, one board member said yesterday.
Non-affiliated legislator Timothy Fok Tsun-ting said the Hong Kong Sports Federation and Olympic Committee (SFOC), of which he is president, would not nominate a representative to sit on an investigating committee.
Announcing the review on Tuesday, board chairman John Hung said the committee would include an SFOC representative.
But Mr Fok said: 'It's just like an internal review . . . it does not carry any meaning at all.
'It has now gone far beyond a question of being accountable to the sports sector - an account to the community is warranted.'
Former legislator Gary Cheng Kai-nam was convicted last month of graft and deception offences while serving as a paid consultant to the board.
