Monopoly means local economy loses out

Wharf Cable

For those residents living in the outlying islands and in many other rural parts of the SAR, cable television is not available and since Wharf Cable has the monopoly of such services in Hong Kong, it may not be available for many years to come.

I called the i-cable network to find out when the service would be coming to my part of Lantau.

I was advised that I should move to Discovery Bay as I could get it on that part of the island.

With the World Cup being held this summer I was hoping that Star Sports would be my salvation and miraculously somehow show some of the matches. However, ESPN has bought the rights to this channel and so I cannot get it.

Because of this I have decided to get one of the Thai satellite systems that are available and will put my hard-earned dollars into a set-up that is not only beamed from Thailand, but where payment is made directly to that country. Consequently, my annual subscription will benefit the economy of that country.

I would have preferred to boost the local economy, but all I got when I tried to do this was an arrogant response. I guess the city that never sleeps got caught sleeping.
