I was pleased to read that nearly $300 million is to be spent over the next financial year on the 'greening' of urban areas (South China Morning Post, January 14).

I feel a big congratulations should go to officials for the wonderful greening through planting that has already been achieved in many of the big, small and awkward areas around Hong Kong.

However, I would like to highlight one area which so far has not enjoyed the benefits of this green policy.

Could a few of the plants that will be made available under this new scheme be put into the empty planters down in the concourse by the Star Ferry in Central?

So many tourists pass through the concourse on their way into Central and the dirty floors, walls and pillars and rusty light fixtures create a very poor impression.

I walk along there every day to work and it is an unpleasant experience. At least a few plants would divert our attention from the filth. Perhaps some of the money could also be spent on a scrubbing machine like the one that is used in front of the Bank of China. It could at least clean up the floor in the concourse.
