The Hong Kong Public Doctors' Association - the biggest union of public doctors, with 1,500 members - said doctors should never consider a patient's background or position while treating them.

The Post reported yesterday that the chairwoman of the Hospital Authority's Public Complaints Committee, Eliza Chan Ching-har, filed a complaint to a public hospital alleging a doctor treating her father directed hostile remarks at him - making reference to her position in the authority.

Her father died of cancer about two months ago. It is not known if she is alleging any medical misconduct.

The Hospital Authority is investigating the complaint.

Ms Chan, a lawyer, heads the committee which handles medical complaints against all 44 public hospitals and medical institutes.

The committee's ruling, which can lead to disciplinary action against doctors, is final within the authority.
