A brave man is New Zealand director Peter Jackson. He has taken on the monumental task of bringing author JRR Tolkien's sword and sorcery fantasies to the big screen starting with this, the first in a three-part series.
And, luckily for us, Jackson has produced a long, dark and daring film that - closer to anything seen on film in some time - transports the audience into a brave new world.
Elijah Wood stars as Frodo Baggins, a hobbit who dwells in a world called Middle-earth. When he is left a ring by the ageing Bilbo (Ian Holm), Frodo's life is changed forever. As his friend, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), goes on to explain, the ring is actually the 'one ring', forged centuries before by the forces of evil and capable, on a good day, of overpowering everything on Middle-earth.
