Shek O

Where your motoring questions are answered

I get a taxi home every night to Shek O and have to endure some pretty erratic drivers. Could you give me some useful Cantonese phrases for when the man behind the wheel fancies himself as Ayrton Senna or when he crawls along at 20km/h for the entire journey?

Frustrated, Shek O

Dear Frustrated, You can try a firm 'faai-di, m-goi', meaning 'faster please' and repeat the phrase a little louder as you edge home. If the driver is going too fast you can try 'maan-di, m-goi' meaning 'slower please'. Repeat the phrase if necessary and have your pen ready if the problem persists. Note the name of the driver and the number of the taxi, the details of which are highlighted on a white plastic mounting on the cab's dashboard. Note the time of your complaint, the speed of your vehicle and your precise location. Then call the Transport Complaints Unit hotline on 2889 9999 or e-mail [email protected]. You can also commend good drivers - and there are plenty about here - under the Taxi Driver Commendation Scheme which is organised by the Ad Hoc Quality Taxi Services steering committee and the Transport Department. For further details telephone 2829 5326 or visit www.info.gov.hk/tcu/enquiry/index.htm for links to police and other government feedback channels.
