Weddings ranging from underwater ceremonies to nuptials on the Peak are likely to be offered if Hong Kong goes ahead with a plan to allow couples to marry anywhere in the territory. The proposal to allow authorised solicitors to conduct weddings wherever couples wish has been warmly welcomed. The South China Morning Post yesterday reported that the Hong Kong Law Society had set up a working group to look into the Government's idea of liberalising the Marriage Ordinance. It plans to present the Government with a paper soon. Hong Kong Underwater Association administrator Lena Lee Ling said even couples who did not swim could marry underwater if they wore adequate equipment and were assisted by scuba-diving instructors. But a spokesman for Blue Water Diver club, Leung Wing-tai, said an underwater ceremony - including boat hire, underwater video cameraman and scuba equipment for guests - would cost at least $100,000. Peak Tower and Peak Tramway marketing director May Tsang Ying-mei suggested a sunset ceremony at the outdoor viewing terrace, or a quick wedding on the Peak Tram, so as not to disrupt traffic. The Peak Lookout's catering executive, Jennifer Sossna, added: 'We have a lot of outdoor and indoor seating and are open to thematic ideas.' Ocean Park public affairs manager Wendy Kwan Lai-hing said she was also open to ideas - from aquarium to roller-coaster weddings. And Lan Kwai Fong Association chairman Allan Zeman said the proposed Marriage Ordinance amendment would put the thrill back into weddings. 'I've been to a few weddings at City Hall and it's like a factory,' he said. 'This allows for so much more creativity for the more free-spirited and makes Hong Kong a more exciting city.' Fung shui master Ma Lai-wah said the idea would open up more opportunities for couples to take advantage of auspicious dates. 'We can find the best days for each couple . . . and they do not have to worry about getting a space on that day,' he said. 'This will bring them good luck.' ravina@scmp.com
