In The Name Of The Father

Pearl have developed a habit of putting good films on at silly times. It seems only insomniacs enjoy a good movie.

In The Name Of The Father is a true story based on Gerry Conlon's book, Proved Innocent, which was adapted by directors Jim Sheridan and Terry George.

It begins in early 1970s Belfast where young Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis, above right) is a likable but wayward youth growing up in a turbulent, violent environment. Gerry's father, Guiseppe (Pete Postlethwaite, above left), arranges for him to escape to England and begs him to stay out of trouble.

Gerry and his boyhood friend, Paul Hill, soon find their way into London's hippy community and take up with Paddy Armstrong and his girlfriend Carole Richardson.

On October 5, 1974, bombs explode in two pubs frequented by British soldiers in Guildford, near London, killing five and injuring many others. Under pressure to find the culprits the police decide Conlon and his friends - Irish, working class, small time criminals - fit the profile. The four are arrested, convicted and imprisoned but are determined to prove their innocence and win their freedom.

A moving film with outstanding performances from Day-Lewis and Postlethwaite. Also starring Emma Thompson and Corin Redgrave. (1993)

Man's Heritage: Temple of The Tigers, India's Bandhavgarh Wilderness

Pearl, 8.30pm

Once a hunting preserve for Indian maharajas, Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the most important tiger habitats remaining in Asia. Within the park an abandoned palace harbours a flourishing population of tigers, bats, monkeys and cobras who share their domain with a solitary temple priest.

The dominant male tiger who has ruled this territory for years is now being challenged by a younger, stronger male, so expect some fireworks.

Don your best jewels and settle back to watch screen goddess Audrey Hepburn in one of her most famous roles.

Directed by Blake Edwards from Truman Capote's novel, Hepburn (above) is Holly Golightly, a small-town girl trying to live the high life in New York. She meets Paul

Varjack (George Peppard) when he moves into her apartment building. He's a writer who is kept by an older woman and she is a high-priced escort looking for a rich, older man to marry. The opening scene of Golightly early morning window-shopping at Tiffany's (with jewels that have been rather implausibly left in the window overnight) after being out all night on a date is quite splendid.

Capote wanted Marilyn Monroe for the part and objected to the changes Paramount made to the screen version of his novel. Hepburn herself didn't quite believe she was the right person to play Golightly although she epitomises the character for the movie's legions of fans. Also starring Mickey Rooney and Buddy Ebsen.
