The controversial Route 10 plan, which passed its first hurdle yesterday, would leave Hong Kong with an inflexible road system and an inadequate airport link, a logistics group said yesterday.

Logistics Association vice-chairman Anthony Wong Foo-wah claimed that after yesterday's approval for the $133.7 million design stage, the Government would have the perfect excuse to avoid altering the project.

The proposal, backed by the Legco Public Works Sub-committee, is for a road connecting a planned bridge to Shenzhen with northeast Lantau, via tunnels in Lam Tei and Tai Lam and the proposed Tsing Lung Bridge.

The association said that cargo from the mainland heading to the airport would need to travel along the North Lantau Highway from the northeast of Lantau - a total distance of about 31km.

Mr Wong said this would cripple the logistics sector, where 'time is money'.

He suggested an alternative route of 19.8km between the cross-border bridge and the airport via Tuen Mun.
