City Of Angels

Pearl, 9.30pm

This is a shining example of Hollywood's penchant for taking a good European film (Wim Wenders' Wings Of Desire) and remaking it into a barely recognisable, honey-coated pile of dross.

Meg Ryan (above) plays Maggie, a heart surgeon who feels totally at a loss after losing a patient. The thing is, her patient was being watched over by Seth (Nicolas Cage), an angel who happens to keep an eye on the city of Los Angeles and guides its dying populace to heaven. Of course, Seth has never seen anyone like Maggie before and soon he falls in love with her. He then decides to become visible so he can communicate with her. This leaves the main players facing a variety of choices: for Seth, should he forgo eternal life in Paradise for a human life (and love) with Maggie? For Maggie, should she leave her fiance for this new man who has come into her life suddenly? And for Cage and Ryan, should they try to push beyond their formidably bad acting abilities and try to do something with the film? The answer to the latter question was, seemingly, no. The only real highlights are the special effects, which at times are breathtaking. Get the Wenders original instead. (1998)
