IF THE PEAK WAS WHERE local big wigs once dwelled in their Mount Olympus-styled retreats during the colonial heyday, then Deep Water Bay is where our modern masters prefer to sail their yachts and play golf on bright Sunday mornings.
According to First Pacific Davies (FPD) senior director Edina Wong, the small district on the south side of Hong Kong Island, made up simply of Deep Water Bay Road and Deep Water Bay Drive, has become the trendy spot to live for Hong Kong's rich and famous, surpassing even the Peak.
Situated between Shouson Hill and its larger neighbour Repulse Bay, the area is characterised by a (for Hong Kong) unique mixture of houses with carefully cultured gardens and townhouse developments. There are no apartments.
Views are spectacular and so are the surroundings. 'The environment here is better, it's close to the beach and Ocean Park - there's more space for children to move about,' Ms Wong said.
'The weather's better, too, since there is no fog here and it's generally warmer than the Peak.'
The area has good access to schools including Bradbury School, South Island School and Hong Kong International School. 'With expatriates, they favour Deep Water Bay over the Peak as there are more English-speaking schools near the area,' she said.
