Congratulations to Chan Hiu-yee, a student from Kiangsu-Chekiang College (Sha Tin). Her piece, published on January 25, has been chosen as the Star Letter of the month. Hiu-yee was responding to a proposal that would amend the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. The proposed legislative changes will restrict parents from gaining access to information about their children from teachers, social workers and friends. Although children should have their privacy protected, said Hiu-yee, it should not be done by law. Hiu-yee supported her argument why legal means were inappropriate, saying it would create unnecessary tension between parents and children.
