Indonesian police are dropping efforts to charge Hutomo 'Tommy' Mandala Putra with a series of bomb attacks in Jakarta in 2000, but may still charge him over the killing of a judge.

The youngest son of former president Suharto may soon be moved from a police cell to the custody of the prosecutor's office.

'We have completed our investigation and questioning,' said Jakarta Chief Detective Bambang Hendarso Danuri.

Mr Danuri said last week there was no concrete evidence Hutomo masterminded the bomb attacks on targets ranging from the Jakarta Stock Exchange to the Philippine Ambassador's residence.

Police also claim they are having trouble finding proof of Hutomo's contempt of court - even though he went on the run after being sentenced to 18 months' jail for corruption.

Police have submitted evidence about his involvement in the contract hit on the judge who imposed that sentence, Supreme Court Justice Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, but a trial date has not been set.
