A man accused of murdering his wife with a pair of scissors told a jury yesterday he had stabbed her in the heart by mistake in their darkened flat.

Father-of-three Lui Leung-yau, 56, said he attacked Lam Wu-min, 52, in the windowless, unlit living room of their flat at about 7am on September 9, 2000.

'In the dark, she made a hand gesture to me . . . I did not see what she was actually holding. I was startled in fear that she had come up to me to attack me . . . so it was by mistake I inflicted injuries on her,' Lui told the Court of First Instance.

Lui is accused of murdering Lam at their home in Hong Keung Street, San Po Kong. He denies the charge.

The couple's youngest daughter, Lui Hoi-yee, 22, who lives at home together with her brother, earlier told the court how her mother had wandered into the bedroom covered in blood after the attack.

Taking the witness stand yesterday, Lui said his late wife was 'somehow quick-tempered' and 'prone to anger'.
