Chief executive Craig Barrett spoke on the need for the technology industry to spend its way out of recession.

Calling last year's 30 per cent drop in revenues for the semiconductor industry overall 'just an unprecedented reduction', Mr Barrett called on developers attending Intel's semi-annual technical meeting to launch more products that would excite consumers and make them willing to buy.

'We have to innovate our way out of this recession with new technology, new products,' he said.

Mr Barrett said despite the failure of many high-flying dotcoms, Internet technology would continue and have a big impact. 'It has just started its build-out around the world', and investment would still go into the Web, he said.

Intel demonstrated graphics applications using Pentium 4 chips running at three gigahertz.

Mr Barrett said he believed Moore's Law - which predicts a doubling of processing power every 18 months - would hold for another 15 years, allowing chips to reach the 30GHz range easily.
