Fu Ming-sun, a doctoral student at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, demonstrates his invention, an advanced method for embedding data into halftone images - such as used in newspapers and magazines - as a security watermark.
The electrical and electronic engineering student was one of two Hong Kong students shortlisted for the 2001 Young Inventors Award run by the Far Eastern Economic Review and Hewlett-Packard. The other was Cheung Hoi-peng from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who designed a secure electronic payment system for third-generation mobile telephone networks.
A total of 14 projects were shortlisted for the prize out of more than 200 entries from 70 universities in Asia. First place was eventually awarded to a student from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines. The prize ceremony took place in Hong Kong this week.
