Recycle paper: Contact the Environmental Protection Department's (EPD) waste reduction and recycling hotline (2755 2750) for a list of companies that collect paper, the greatest source of office waste. Sadly, Hong Kong has only two companies that collect as well as recycle, but in 2000 we exported 86 per cent of the 826,000 tonnes of waste paper to the mainland for processing.

Growing green: Keeping plants in the office not only makes the environment more pleasant but also helps improve air quality as they exude oxygen. Plants release humidity into the air which can help neutralise the drying effects of excessive air-conditioning. Take a look at www.growinglifestyle.com for a list of effective plants that survive well indoors or in low light.

Clean air: Hong Kong has the odd case of Legionnaire's disease - a form of bacterial pneumonia that can arise from inadequately maintained air-conditioning systems. Make sure your systems are inspected regularly. Save on power bills by keeping suitable temperature levels.

Other recyclables: The EPD also has information on companies that collect unwanted or used stationery, computers and even clothing.
