Students from St Paul's Secondary School had an eye-opening experience using the biggest computerised telescope of its kind in Hong Kong at the Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre recently.
The visit, organised by the school's astronomy society, included a seminar and star-gazing session.
Participants were led to a dome-shaped building, which housed the gigantic telescope. An officer demonstrated how the telescope was controlled using the computer and voice-control technology.
After inputting the name of the star he wanted the telescope to find, and saying 'move', it automatically rotated to the right position. The dome also opened up in the correct place for the telescope. Later, the visitors were given binoculars and small telescopes to use.
Despite the cloudy night, everyone was impressed and astonished at how advanced the telescope technology was.
