Starting up an organic farm in the school yard has earned Chai Wan Kok Catholic Primary School (PM) a top award in an environmental protection competition.
The school won the championship in the primary category of the second Hong Kong Green School campaign.
A total of 165 primary and secondary schools entered with environmental management plans they had designed themselves.
Principal of the winning school, Leung Shuk-yee, said it was not difficult to correct children's behaviour once they had grasped green principles. Follow-up efforts and parents' participation were essential to rounded environmental education, she added.
Pupils at the school are taught to be green consumers and choose environmentally friendly products.
However, altering teenagers' habits required more effort. HKCWC Fung Yiu King Memorial Secondary School was the winner in the secondary category.
