I REFER to the letter from Brian Jones headlined, ''Alleviate border chaos'' (South China Morning Post, July 15). I support his views regarding congestion at the border crossing in Lo Wu. His descriptions are accurate. The cause of the trouble does not originate from the Chinese side. It is the Hongkong side, where officials are so inefficient that they cannot cope with the fast-moving crowd and consequently, there is a bottleneck. With summer upon us, the number of people travelling to the mainland will increase. The congestion problems therefore have to be addressed immediately, in order to avert a tragedy. Also, the authorities on both sides of the border should regard, as a priority, the safety of the elderly and children. PATRICK PANG Yuen Long
