1967: Ching Chun-wah, a 14-year-old student of Tsung Sun Primary School, defeated 59 other finalists to win a crossword puzzle contest held at City Hall Restaurant. She won a washing machine. In golf, Alan Sutcliffe beat A R Hamilton 7 and 5 to win the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club Championship at Fanling.

1969: Tennis ace Richard 'Pancho' Gonzales, here on a business trip, dropped a bombshell by announcing that he would not be at Wimbledon later in the year. Speaking at the Chinese Recreation Club, he said he had an 'obligation to 25 youngsters' at his tennis ranch in the US.

1973: Hong Kong and China Gas reported a healthy profit increase to $6.8 million. The company had posted net profits of $5.3 million the previous year (both figures net after tax).

1976: About $600 million was to be spent on the development of three new towns in the New Territories. Barrie Wiggham,

deputy secretary for the New Territories, said the expenditure would not be restricted to just Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan and Sha Tin, although that was where the main spending would be.
