Strict dress codes are still very popular
I refer to the report headlined 'Staff take casual approach to work' (South China Morning Post, February 23).
A survey has revealed that compared to other Asian cities employees in Hong Kong are less likely to wear suits or uniforms.
I have been working here for almost two years and I disagree with the survey's findings. I think most Hong Kong businessmen do wear suits. SAR people are very fashion conscious and many of them love wearing designer-label clothes.
Compared to my home country, Germany, all the companies I have come across here are very strict when it comes to dress codes and even expect staff members in junior positions to wear suits.
It has been my experience that when you dress casually it can be a big disadvantage when you are shopping. Retail staff just ignore you and are very reluctant to serve you.
I hope that there is a dressing down trend beginning and that it will continue so that we eventually reach the more casual look that is accepted in Europe.
