We now have reports of babies born to women who were exposed to passive smoking while pregnant as being less healthy than babies whose mothers were not exposed to passive smoking.

The Government could help those who would prefer not to be exposed to passive smoking.

It could start by banning smoking in public places that are indoors (as is already the case for many shopping malls) and also in offices.

Why should non-smokers have to be exposed to the stink, not to mention health hazards, from smoking by people selfish enough to do it in confined places? Arguably, people can choose whether to go out for meals but, if you are fortunate enough to have a job, you cannot control the conditions under which you work.

It should be both an offence to smoke in an office building and also an offence to permit such smoking.

However, I fear that the administration will do nothing after last week's announcement that the proposal to extend anti-smoking legislation was to be postponed because of the economic downturn.
