An express magnetic-levitation train line running between Guangzhou and the Disney theme park on Lantau was proposed by the city's mayor yesterday.

Lin Shusen, attending the National People's Congress meeting in Beijing, said he would put the idea to Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa to help strengthen links between the two cities.

He said it would be ideal to have the terminus at the Disney park so that commuters could visit the attraction when it opened in 2005.

'Provided the express line is non-stop, it would take just 30 minutes,' he said. He estimated the line could bring two million mainland tourists to the SAR each year.

Mr Lin said an alternative was to increase the speed of KCRC trains between Kowloon and Shenzhen to up to 200km/h. He said he would submit the proposal at today's Hong Kong/ Guangdong Co-operation Joint Conference.

Meanwhile, the head of the Highways Department's railway development office, John Chai Sung-veng, warned yesterday that a magnetic-levitation rail system could pose problems.
