Only a handful of Web content-management software firms are expected to survive this year as lingering economic woes continue to weaken demand for their products.

Vignette product marketing vice-president Leif Pedersen said: 'This is going to be the year of separation for us from the pack.'
The company's rivals are mostly United States-based firms including Interwoven, Documentum, Stellent, private company Percussion Software and even Microsoft, which purchased Canadian content-management specialist NCompass. In Europe, the major player is private vendor Tridion.
