Lee Teng-hui 'invited to speak'

Ray Cheung

Former Taiwan president Lee Teng-hui has received a tentative invitation to speak at the National Press Club in Washington in May, Taiwan's China Times reported yesterday.

The newspaper said Mr Lee was scheduled to address the club on May 24, although details had yet to be finalised.

Mr Lee, the former Kuomintang chairman, would be the second Taiwanese politician to speak at the club in less than two months. His KMT successor, Lien Chan, is scheduled to speak there on April 18.

Mr Lee was originally invited to give an address to the club last year when he returned to his alma mater, Cornell University. However, he turned down the invitation, citing a busy schedule.
