Three teenagers, one aged only 13, yesterday committed suicide in a rented room in Cheung Chau's Bella Vista Villas, the resort dubbed the suicide capital of Hong Kong.
The bodies of the two girls and a boy were discovered by the manager of the apartment at 2.30pm. A pot of charcoal and sleeping pills were nearby.
The case caused deep concern among social welfare officials, who urged youngsters with personal problems to seek help.
Suicide notes signed by the classmates, who all went to Maryknoll Secondary School in Ngau Tau Kok, were found in the ground-floor room of Block 4E, where the bodies were lying on a bed. The notes told friends not to grieve and apologised to the victims' parents.
The victims were Lee Choi-ling, 13, Chan Wing-yun, 14, and Tai Wai-ha, 15.
Wing-yun's parents said their son was very active and a member of his school's elite students' class. 'We cannot bring ourselves to believe Wing-yun would kill himself. We can't figure out why this happened,' his mother said.
