An 11-year-old boy with a history of asthma problems died after collapsing during a basketball game at his school in Causeway Bay yesterday.

Primary Six pupil Ma Tsz-chung was apparently bumped into a wall during a physical education lesson by one of his classmates before fainting on the court at Buddhist Wong Cheuk Um Primary School in Eastern Hospital Road, a police spokesman said.

Initial investigations showed there were no suspicious circumstances. A postmortem examination will be carried out.

Tsz-chung collapsed soon after 11.30am. He was taken to Tang Shiu Kin Hospital, where he was declared dead.

School principal Wong Chap-fan said the school was told by hospital doctors that the boy had suffered an asthma attack.

Mr Wong added that when the incident happened, the teacher was measuring the heights and weights of some students and did not see what had happened.
