South China Morning Post journalists and photographers received nine prizes in the Hong Kong News Awards for last year at the Grand Hyatt Hotel yesterday.

(From left) Photographer K.Y. Cheng won the second runner-up in the sports section, photographer David Wong Chi-kin took a merit award, also in sports, photographer Garrige Ho won a merit in features, chief photographer Robert Ng was first runner-up in news, Beijing correspondent Mark O'Neill won a merit in news writing, deputy business editor Matthew Brooker took a merit award in business news reporting, photographer Oliver Tsang Wai-tak received a merit in the news section and photographer Ricky Chung Wai-kwong a merit award in sports.

Deputy Editor C. K. Lau accepted an award for the Post's Seattle-based correspondent, Michael Chugani, whose series of reports on China's alleged smuggling kingpin Lai Changxing was rated the second runner-up in the best news reporting category.

The annual event is organised by the Hong Kong Newspaper Society.
