Minors getting alcohol from stores

SCMP Reporter

My teenage son attended the Rugby Sevens with his friends for the first time.

I knew that a lot of alcohol was consumed by some Sevens fans, so I warned him not to be tempted to drink.

I was relieved to learn that the organisers were very strict and would not sell any alcohol to minors.

I wish this was case at all retail outlets in Hong Kong.

My son tells me that a lot of his friends who attend English Schools Foundation and international schools are under-age drinkers and that some convenience stores in the Causeway Bay area openly sell alcohol to them. Identity cards are seldom checked.

What is going on here? I would like to hear from some of the major convenience store chains and find out what their policy is regarding the sale of alcohol and cigarettes to minors.
