Ally McBeal World, 10pm The mousy blonde lawyer jumps head first into her fifth season of David E Kelley's award-winning sitcom. The law firm of Cage and Fish is still populated by the usual suspects: senior partner Richard Fish (Greg Germann), a legal shark dedicated to the principle that 'it's not just winning, it's winning ugly that matters'; high-octane secretary Elaine (Jane Krakowski); the quirky but brilliant lawyer John Cage (Peter MacNicol); and title character Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart, above), a young, single woman in pursuit of personal happiness. In tonight's season opener, Ally zips along a Boston street on a motorised razor scooter and accidentally collides with Jenny Shaw (Julianne Nicholson), a woman in her late 20s. The pair discover they have a lot in common. Ally announces that she is hiring Jenny - surprising Richard as he does the hiring and firing. He'd already hired a new member of staff which, rather unfortunately, turns out to be Jenny's ex-boyfriend Glenn Foy (James Marsden). But Jenny brings 72,000 plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit to the firm, which fires the dollar signs in Richard's eyes. Meanwhile, Ally and John have a misunderstanding when he overhears her say she loves him.
