SEPTEMBER 11 last year was a day of destruction and despair out of which has come a deeper understanding of the meaning of life.

Many local teachers have managed to turn the shock and fear surrounding the terrorist attacks into hope and compassion among their students.

The tragedy inspired art and design students at Ning Po College to produce some of their best work.

Using abstract symbols from Australian Aboriginal art, a group of Form Three students expressed their longing for peace in the world.

'The artwork is not political. Rather, it is an exploration of their feelings about nature, harmony and suffering in the world,' explained art and design teacher Yan Sin-yee.

One of the school's goals this year is to encourage students to care more about society, and take on a world perspective. The incident was one stimulus for this, she said.
